Pennsylvania ProStart Student Invitational
ProStart® is a nationwide program for high school students that develops their talent into tomorrow’s restaurant and foodservice industry leaders. PRLA and our Educational Foundation annually host a competition for Pennsylvania ProStart students to showcase their culinary talents and creativity.
How does the competition work?
The Pennsylvania ProStart Student Invitational (PAPSI) is composed of two distinct competitions—management and culinary—that showcase the most important skills needed on either side of the restaurant and foodservice industry. We are excited to be back in person for the 2022 competition!
Teams will demonstrate their knowledge of the restaurant and foodservice industry by developing a business proposal for potential “investors” with a new restaurant concept. The business proposal will consist of a defined restaurant concept, supporting menu, and supporting marketing plan. Teams will prepare a comprehensive written proposal, and verbal presentation. Teams will also be tested on their critical thinking skills by reacting to potential management challenges related to their concept.
Teams demonstrate their culinary knowledge, skills, and creative abilities during the competition through the preparation of a unique three-course meal consisting of (i) a starter; (ii) an entrée; and (iii) a dessert. Performance during the Culinary event is observed and rated by judges from the foodservice industry and post-secondary schools. Teams demonstrate their ability to work together while creating and presenting their meal.
Who can participate?
All high school students, currently enrolled in a confirmed ProStart program recognized by the NRAEF, who have been certified to represent their school or region at the Pennsylvania State competition are eligible to compete. Participating teams will consist of two (2) to four (4) team members plus one (1) optional team manager.

2022 PA ProStart Bootcamp
We will host our annual PA ProStart student bootcamp at the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts campus in Punxsutawney on January 13, 2022. More information to come.
How to Support the Competition
Industry members can support this event by attending the competition (free) and lunch ($25/person), volunteering the day of the event, donating goods for the culinary students to use during the competition, donating swag for registration bags, or providing financial support by signing on to one of our support packages.
